On my way to work late last night, I was headed down the road at a pretty good speed. Suddenly I came upon a herd of deer crossing the road. Unfortunately for me the road was both dark and slick and I hit one, which sent my car spinning out of control on the ice. I called out to Jesus as my car crashed into a deep ditch. As you can imagine I was upset and shaky, with an injured knee, but I told Jesus all about it "What am I going to do? I'm stuck late at night in a deep ditch in a badly damaged car in freezing weather." I felt like a helpless little boy crying out to His Father for help. Suddenly a calming presence came over me that was hard to explain and faith replaced my fear. All of the sudden a car stopped and shortly a man yelled, "Are you okay?" At his invitation I joined him in his car to keep warm. Interestingly enough he just happened to have my insurance carrier’s number, which was good since I was badly shaken up. He waited with me for forty minutes until I had summoned help, comforting me and keeping me warm in his car. Soon I discovered that he was an RN and a very strong believer in Christ. I felt badly that I had held him up, so I thanked him and sent him on his way. I climbed back into my cold car, and a minute later a police officer arrived and took control of the situation. He too, invited me to get warm in his cruiser then checked on the status of my tow truck. He went out of his way to encourage and help me, taking care of all the details of my accident. As I sat in his car a Christian song came on the secular radio, about the faithfulness of God, and I just had to smile. (On a side note: I am extremely grateful for law enforcement people who faithfully serve, laying their lives on the line, in a day where many officers get a bad rap. The truth is that there are many excellent officers who love to serve! Appreciate them!) He stayed with me until my daughter and her boyfriend arrived to take me home. Not long afterward I pondered these things:
1) In just a moment--BAM--life can be over---YOU can face eternity. Are you ready?
2) Our Heavenly Father responds to simple, child-like faith. When I felt helpless and shaken my God sent His calming presence and compassionate people to intervene. He sent a Christian nurse (a comforter and healer) and a police officer (protection) to assist me while keeping me warm (in a shelter of His presence), declaring over me that He is faithful no matter what challenges I face.
3) If God can do all these things to help me in my time of need--how much more can God direct our steps and coordinate the path ahead. For "our steps are ordered of the Lord" and "He will be a light unto our path and lamp unto our feet." We can have faith knowing our lives are in the palm of His hands; we do not have to fear. He knows exactly what is happening, and His plan is always good if we only call on His name! Let His calming presence bring you peace as you draw near and worship a big and compassionate Father!
