Oh... how refreshed we can feel when we spend a full night in persevering prayer. Remember the days when churches prayed all night? When talking to God was more valuable even than sleep? When it was more important than enter- tainment and the feeding of the flesh? There is something special about sitting with the Lord all night, and pouring out our hearts. There is something special about feasting on His presence until the dawn shines its early light.
Communication between you and God during the night can grip your heart and be absolutely life changing. “Melt my heart again with your love, Lord!” In all night prayer we fast our sleep, comfort, and rest, but we gain an increasing measure of the presence, power, and love for God. When you seek Him all night, the nights may seem longer, but in the quietness of the seeking, you will find Him whom your soul desires.
When we spend all night in prayer we declare a night of lovesick yearning for God. We are too consumed to sleep, choosing Him over our warm and cozy beds. Much like young lovers eat, sleep, and drink of love... the reality of God’s amazing love overwhelms our senses. In making the choice to spend time with Him in all night prayer our passion for God is restored and our hunger for Him increases. “Things” lose their meaning and everything else grows strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.
Close communion with the Lord can be accomplished – if we are willing to “pay the price” of sweet surrender, sweet embrace, sweet death of the flesh and the sweet embrace of His perfect will. Do you want to be the friend of God? Try setting aside a night of lovesick yearning for God. Watch your hunger for Him intensify and His manifest presence increase in your life.
“At about that same time he climbed a mountain to pray. He (JESUS) was there all night in prayer before God. The next day he summoned his disciples; from them he selected twelve he designated as apostles”
Dear Father, give me the grace to spend a full night in prayer before you! Let me be as my sweet Jesus who often prayed while it was still dark. Let me also spend quality time in your presence. I love you, Father, and I am lovesick for you. And while the night is young I declare my heart is yours. Take my sleep as a precious gift, for it belongs to you. Is it really a sacrifice, Lord, to bask in your presence and feast at your table?
